The Acton Institute pays special tribute to one of its board members and president of Universidad Francisco Marroquín, Giancarlo Ibárgüen S., the recipient of this year’s Guardian of Freedom Award, for his constant focus and steadfast efforts towards the development and achievement of a free society. Representatives of the Cato Institute; the Liberty Fund; the Acton Institute, including its founder and president Reverend Robert A. Sirico; and founder and former president of Universidad Francisco Marroquín, Manuel F. Ayau, salute Ibárgüen, recognizing his remarkable leadership at the university and a life dedicated to the cause of freedom.
Giancarlo Ibárgüen S.
Giancarlo Ibárgüen S. is president of Universidad Francisco Marroquín, director of the Centro Henry Hazlitt, and a member of the board of directors of that institution. He is also president of the Centro de Estudios Económico-Sociales (CEES) and member of the Mont Pelerin Society, Philadelphia Society, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and Liberty Fund, Inc. He has published articles on economics and telecommunications in the Argentinean journal Libertas and Great Britain's Telecommunications Policy. Ibárgüen S. holds a BS in electronic engineering from Texas A&M University.
The Acton Institute for the Study of Religion and Freedom was named in honor of the English historian, Lord John Acton (1834-1902) who is best known for his famous remark: “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Acton Institute’s mission is to promote a free and virtuous society characterized by individual liberty and sustained by religious principles. In order to carry out its mission, the institute holds seminars and publishes books, monographs, periodicals, and articles.
