Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia, discusses the ideas behind a free web culture. Wikipedia, with over 11 million published articles, is a free, licensed global encyclopedia written by thousands of volunteers in over 250 languages. Wales talks about the characteristics and challenges of this software and long-term goals related to broadening participation, fostering quality, and increasing worldwide reach. Wales also introduces his new project, Wikia, which is not only an encyclopedia but a complete library; extending the Wikipedia model to create nonprofit educational and research communities. There are also plans for Wikia to launch a search engine that will offer new features like open source software and freely licensed content. The conference concludes with a brief presentation of Creative Commons licensing for Guatemala.

Jimmy Wales is the founder of Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia created in 2001. He is a member of the board and chair emeritus of the Wikimedia Foundation that operates several online collaborative wiki projects, including Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Wikiquote, and others. He also serves as president of Wikia, Inc. Wales holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in finance from Auburn University and University of Alabama, respectively.
